Senegal ACA country level meeting February 8 & 9 2007 Print E-mail

Senegal, with its crop of approximately 15,000 MT, is a relatively small cashew producing country, compared to its neighbour Guinea Bissau (appr > 100,000 MT). However, the private sector working in cashews is eager to organize itself, and collaborate to create a strong sector with a good reputation for quality and efficiency. During the meeting on 8 & 9 February, held in Saly, >80 people participated, and a national ACA body was created consisting of a producer, a processor, an exporter and a raw nut buyer. USAID's Economic Growth Program (SAGIC) will help this new committee getting started and program for activities. Although processing is seen as an important means to create more value and employment in the country, speakers also stressed the need to better structure the value chain of the raw nut trade, creating value by delivering a high quality product in terms of size, drying and packaging.

Hari Nair, CEO of Western India Cashews, one of the big processors in India who was invited to present the view of a buyer of African raw nuts, discussed issues like the fall in prices of raw cashews last year and the reason behind several recent disputes in the raw cashew trade from Cote d'Ivoire. His presentation included suggestions on how Africa can develop its cashew sector and create a firmer position on the world market.
