India pushed to 3rd place in cashew production

Kochi, Dec 11 India, which had been the pioneer and topper in raw cashew nut production in the world until recently, has lost its position to Vietnam and Nigeria and occupies the third place.

However, it continues to keep its top position in processing and exports using imported raw nuts.

Kochi (PTI): With a view to protecting their interests, a Global Alliance for Cashew consisting of three main cashew producers India, Brazil and Vietnamwould be formed, Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh on Friday said.

Cashew prices continued their climb but the pace seems to have slowed down. Business done W240 around 3.05, W320 from 2.65 to 2.70, W450 around 2.55 FOB Reasonable quantities were traded from India & Vietnam for shipments upto March and there were some sales for later positions as well.. Brazil is still not offering although it is reported that RCN arrivals are picking up.

Vietnam, which is currently the second largest producer and exporter of cashew in the world, would overtake India in few years time if concerted efforts were not taken by the authorities to increase the production of raw cashew nuts indigenously.

Firm undertone continued in the cashew market but volume of business was limited. Price levels W240 around 2.95, W320 around 2.60, and W450 around 2.50 FOB. Indian domestic demand and prices for broken grades are very high. Tanzania RCN auctions started and 4-5000mt traded at high levels - cost equivalent to approx 1050 C&F.
